WMS (Warehouse Management System)

Category: Warehousing

Also searched as: WMS

Definition (plain English)

A WMS is software used to control warehouse receiving, putaway, storage locations, inventory status, picking, packing, dispatch, and stock adjustments.

Why it matters commercially

For importers and distributors, WMS data decides whether stock is usable, allocated, traceable, and shipped in the right batch or expiry order.

Example

A 3PL could receive a container the same day, but the stock was not available to sell until the WMS captured lot codes, expiry dates, and pallet locations.

Common mistake

Assuming warehouse receipt equals available inventory before WMS receipt, quality hold release, batch capture, and allocation rules are complete.
