Gross Weight
Category: Logistics
Definition (plain English)
Gross weight is the total shipment weight including product, inner packs, cartons, pallets, wrapping, dunnage, and any other packaging.
Why it matters commercially
Carriers, forwarders, warehouses, and customs documents use gross weight for booking limits, VGM, freight cost, handling safety, and document matching.
Example
A forwarder paused a booking because the packing list used product-only weight while the loaded pallets exceeded the truck and container planning weight.
Common mistake
Sending net weight to a forwarder, carrier, or broker when they need gross weight by carton, pallet, container, or shipment total.
