Volumetric Weight
Category: Logistics
Definition (plain English)
Volumetric weight converts shipment volume into a weight equivalent so carriers can bill bulky low-density cargo fairly against available space.
Why it matters commercially
Air, courier, and some road or LCL lanes bill on volumetric or chargeable weight, so a light but bulky product can cost more than expected.
Example
A 420 kg air shipment rated at 690 kg volumetric weight after carton dimensions were checked, changing the freight quote and landed cost.
Common mistake
Quoting freight from gross weight alone without checking the carrier divisor, carton dimensions, pallet build, and whether actual or volumetric weight is higher.
