EXW
Category: Incoterms
Definition (plain English)
Ex Works means the seller makes goods available at a named place, usually its premises, while the buyer takes on pickup, export handling, main freight, import clearance, and delivery.
Why it matters commercially
EXW can make a supplier quote look cheap while pushing operational work, export clearance risk, origin charges, and freight visibility onto the buyer.
Example
A buyer accepted EXW factory pricing, then discovered the supplier would not handle export filing and the forwarder had to add pickup, origin documents, and loading charges.
Common mistake
Using EXW with an overseas supplier before confirming who can legally export, who books pickup, and which origin charges are excluded from the unit price.
