Drayage
Category: Logistics
Also searched as: Drayage
Definition (plain English)
Drayage is the short-haul movement of a container or cargo between a port, rail terminal, warehouse, depot, or nearby delivery point.
Why it matters commercially
Drayage controls port pickup timing, demurrage and detention exposure, chassis or appointment constraints, warehouse receiving, and the final cost of getting cargo usable.
Example
The importer booked drayage from the port to a 3PL, but the trucker needed a delivery appointment and empty-return plan before free time expired.
Common mistake
Treating drayage as simple local trucking without confirming free time, chassis fees, wait time, overweight limits, delivery appointment, and empty-container return.
