Countervailing Duty

Category: Customs

Also searched as: CVD

Definition (plain English)

An extra duty applied to offset certain subsidies on imported goods from specific origins or suppliers.

Why it matters commercially

Countervailing duty can materially change landed cost and may apply only to specific products, countries, producers, or periods.

Example

A buyer paused a quote when tariff review found countervailing measures on the planned origin.

Common mistake

Checking only base duty and missing trade-remedy duties that apply on top of the normal tariff.
