Commodity Code

Category: Customs

Definition (plain English)

A country-specific import or export classification code that extends the HS framework into the digits required for local declarations and duty measures.

Why it matters commercially

The full commodity code can change duty rate, VAT treatment, import controls, quotas, and documentation requirements compared with the shorter HS heading.

Example

The UK broker could not pre-clear the goods until the buyer provided the full commodity code, not just the six-digit HS code from the supplier quote.

Common mistake

Using the same six-digit HS code for pricing and declaration when the destination market requires a longer local code with extra measures.
