ATA Carnet
Category: Customs
Also searched as: ATA Carnet
Definition (plain English)
An international customs document that allows eligible goods to be temporarily imported without normal duty and tax payment if they are re-exported on time.
Why it matters commercially
Carnets can make samples, trade-show goods, and professional equipment easier to move, but misuse can trigger duty, penalties, and seizure.
Example
A sales team used an ATA Carnet for demo equipment at an overseas exhibition and tracked return shipment before the carnet expired.
Common mistake
Using a carnet for goods that will be sold, consumed, modified, or left behind instead of confirming eligibility and re-export deadline.
